Tarmac Contractors Near You

 Groundworks

If you are looking for tarmac contractors near you in Cornwall, RW Groundworks delivers machine-laid tarmac to highways specification. We arrive with the proper equipment and qualified highway operatives. We use proper paving equipment, rollers, and compaction machinery to lay tarmac that meets the spec — whether that is a private driveway, an estate road being built for adoption, or a car park resurfacing.

Our tarmac services include:

• Binder course and surface course — machine-laid to specified thickness and compacted with Bomag rollers

• Regulating course — levelling existing surfaces before overlay

• Road planing — removing old tarmac before resurfacing

• Patch repairs — pothole filling and localised resurfacing

• Edge restraints and kerbing — concrete, granite, or conservation kerbs to highway spec

We own our compaction plant — 120 Bomag roller, 80 Bomag roller, RTSC3 remote Rammax, and wacker plates — so we control the quality of every layer from sub-base through to finished surface.

Road Construction — Full Build Capability

 Groundworks

New road construction is not just laying tarmac. It starts with the ground and works up through multiple engineered layers, each one compacted and tested before the next goes down.

A typical road build includes:

• Site strip and excavation — removing topsoil, excavating to formation level using our 14T Doosan

• Formation treatment — geotextile membrane, lime stabilisation, or ground improvement depending on soil conditions

• Sub-base — Type 1 crushed stone laid in layers and compacted to refusal

• Kerbing and edge restraints — concrete or granite kerbs bedded and haunched

• Drainage — road gullies, channels, pipe runs, and connections to the surface water system

• Base course — dense bitumen macadam (DBM) laid and rolled

• Surface course — wearing course tarmac machine-laid and compacted

• Line marking and finishing — if required for adoption or commercial use

We build roads for developers, landowners, farms, holiday parks, and local authorities across Cornwall.

Traffic Management in Cornwall

 Groundworks

Any work on or near the public highway requires proper traffic management — chapter 8 signage, barriers, cones, and in some cases traffic signals or road closures. Getting this wrong means fines, liability, and potentially dangerous conditions for road users.

RW Groundworks provides traffic management for our highway works. Our team holds the necessary qualifications for:

• Chapter 8 sign and cone layouts — for footway and carriageway works

• Temporary traffic signals — for single-lane working

• Road closure management — coordinating with Cornwall Council highways department

• Pedestrian management — barriers and walkways around work areas

We handle the traffic management planning, permits, and on-site setup as part of the project — one less thing for you to coordinate.

Estate Roads and Adoption

 Groundworks

Building roads on housing developments that will eventually be adopted by the local authority requires strict adherence to Cornwall Council's adoption standards. The road must be built to the right spec, with the right materials, compacted to the right density, and with drainage that connects properly to the public system.

RW Groundworks builds estate roads from formation through to surface course. We work to Section 38 (new road) and Section 278 (highway works) agreements and coordinate inspections with the adopting authority.

Car Parks and Commercial Surfacing

 Groundworks

Car parks take a beating — heavy vehicles, turning movements, standing water. A car park that is not built properly starts cracking and potholing within a couple of years.

We build car parks with:

• Proper sub-base depth for the expected traffic loading

• Falls designed to drain surface water to gullies — not puddles in the middle

• Heavy-duty tarmac specification where needed

• Marking and signage to meet DDA accessibility requirements

F.A.Q

Landscaping Frequently Asked

Questions

Here are answers to common questions about our Landscaping services.

How much does tarmac cost per square metre?

Tarmac surfacing typically costs £40-£80 per m2 for a standard two-coat system (base course and surface course) on a prepared sub-base. The total cost including excavation, sub-base, and kerbing is higher — usually £80-£150 per m2 depending on the depth of build-up required. Large areas like car parks and estate roads benefit from economies of scale. We quote per project after a site assessment.

How long does tarmac last?

A properly laid tarmac surface lasts 15-25 years depending on traffic loading, drainage, and sub-base quality. Roads built to adoption standard with correct sub-base depth and compaction should last 20+ years before needing resurfacing. The key to longevity is what goes underneath — skimp on the sub-base and the surface fails early regardless of how good the tarmac is.

How long does tarmac take to lay?

Tarmac can be laid and rolled in a single day for most residential driveways and small car parks. Estate roads are laid in sections as the development progresses. The tarmac itself sets quickly — it is workable for about 20-30 minutes after delivery, which is why machine-laying and immediate rolling are critical. Weather needs to be dry and above 5 degrees C for laying.

How long before you can drive on new tarmac?

Light foot traffic is fine within a few hours of laying. Cars can drive on new tarmac after 24-48 hours in warm weather, or 3-5 days in cooler conditions. Heavy vehicles should stay off for at least 7 days. For the first few weeks, avoid sharp turns, parking in the same spot repeatedly, or placing heavy point loads (like jack stands) on the surface.

Is tarmac or block paving better for a driveway?

Tarmac is faster to install, cheaper per m2, and requires less maintenance. Block paving costs more upfront but offers more design options and individual blocks can be replaced if damaged. Tarmac handles heavy traffic and turning movements better, while block paving can shift if the sub-base is not properly compacted. For a working driveway with regular vehicle use, tarmac is the more practical choice. For a front driveway where appearance matters, block paving may suit better.
