Looking for patio installers in Cornwall? RW Groundworks builds patios that last. Not the type that sink in the corners after two winters — properly prepared, properly laid patios with full groundwork underneath.
Reuben Williams has been in construction for over 12 years. We don't just lay slabs on top of soil and hope for the best. Every patio we build starts with the ground — excavation, sub-base, compaction, then the finished surface. That's why our patios stay level and drain properly, even after years of Cornish weather.
We work across Cornwall, from Helston to Truro, Falmouth, Penzance and the surrounding areas.

We install patios in a range of materials to suit your property and your budget:
Block Paving — Durable, versatile, and available in dozens of colours and patterns. Good for both traditional and modern properties. Easy to lift and relay if you ever need access to services underneath.
Natural Stone — Granite, slate, sandstone and limestone. Natural stone suits older Cornish properties and gives a high-end finish. Each slab is unique.
Porcelain Paving — Low maintenance, slip-resistant, and frost-proof. Porcelain has become popular because it stays looking clean with minimal effort.
Concrete Slabs — Premium materials at fair rates — concrete slabs do the job well. Modern concrete slabs come in finishes that look far better than the old grey squares.
Indian Sandstone — One of the most popular choices in Cornwall. Warm tones, natural texture, and good value for the quality.
Whatever material you choose, we prepare the ground properly — excavation, Type 1 sub-base compacted in layers, and a full mortar bed. We also handle edging, drainage falls, and any step or retaining wall work needed.

Most patio problems — sinking slabs, pooling water, uneven surfaces — come from poor preparation underneath. The paving is only as good as what's beneath it.
Quality varies hugely between paving contractors, and what sets RW Groundworks apart is the groundwork. We're a groundworks company first. We dig foundations and lay drainage for house builds. So when we prepare a patio base, it gets the same attention as a building foundation — proper excavation depth, compacted sub-base, correct drainage falls.
That's the difference between a patio that looks good for a summer and one that looks good for 20 years.

We've laid patios for properties across Cornwall — from small courtyard areas in Helston to large wraparound patios on rural builds near Truro. Many of our patio jobs come alongside other work we're doing on site — a new driveway, a garden retaining wall, or drainage improvements.
If you're having other groundwork done at the same time, it often makes sense to get the patio done as part of the same project. One team, one mobilisation, and the plant is already on site.
RW Groundworks operates across Cornwall from our base in Helston. Eight core service areas, all within easy reach of the A30 corridor.

Here are answers to common questions about our Patios services.

A: A straightforward patio using concrete slabs on a properly prepared base starts from around £80 to £100 per square metre. Natural stone and porcelain are higher — typically £120 to £180 per square metre. The final price depends on the size, material, access, and any additional work like steps, walls or drainage. We provide free quotes based on a site visit.
A: In most cases, no. Patios are permitted development as long as the total area of hard surfacing (including sheds and other structures) doesn't cover more than 50% of the garden. If your property is listed or in a conservation area, you should check with Cornwall Council before starting.
A: A typical domestic patio takes three to five days from start to finish — that includes excavation, sub-base preparation, laying, and pointing. Larger or more complex jobs with steps, walls or drainage may take a week or more. We give you a timeline with your quote.
A: Porcelain and granite perform well in wet conditions — both are dense, frost-resistant, and low maintenance. Indian sandstone is popular but benefits from sealing to prevent algae buildup. We'll advise on the right material for your specific situation and aspect.
A: If a patio is raised more than 300mm above the existing ground level adjacent to the boundary, it may need planning permission. Patios at ground level or with modest changes in height are generally fine under permitted development rules.
A: Not always a full concrete slab, but it does need a compacted sub-base. We use MOT Type 1 compacted in layers, then a mortar bed for the paving. For porcelain slabs, we use a specific adhesive system on a concrete screed. The method depends on the material — we match the preparation to what's being laid.
A: A properly installed patio on a well-prepared base will last 20 to 30 years or more. Natural stone and porcelain can last a lifetime with basic maintenance. The most common reason patios fail early is poor preparation underneath — which is exactly what we focus on getting right.
A: We can lay patios through most of the year. We avoid working in heavy frost as it affects mortar and adhesive curing, but Cornwall's milder winters mean we lose fewer days than most parts of the country. We'll advise on timing if your project falls in the colder months.
